Day 1 – Welcome to Italy… Rome – The Eternal City

Upon arrival at the airport or train station, you’ll be met and escorted to the Rose Garden Palace Hotel, ideally located in the heart of the Eternal City just off the Via Veneto. Our local Roman host will be on hand to offer personal suggestions for exploring on your own and for tonight’s dinner.

Day 2 – Glory of the Vatican

Join your experienced Roman guide this morning for a tour of the Vatican Museums, home to one of the world’s greatest collections of art and antiquity. Ascend the beautiful Spiral Staircase and marvel at the Gallery of the Tapestries. You’ll also visit the fascinating Gallery of Geographical Maps and, of course, the famous Sistine Chapel with its magnificent fresco of the Last Judgment by Michelangelo. Your sightseeing ends with a guided visit of St. Peter’s Basilica. Begun in the middle of the 15th century, the world’s largest church was built over a span of more than 100 years by the greatest architects of the time. Enjoy a free afternoon and then experience a genuine slice of Roman life when you dine in the home of a local family.  Meals B+D

Day 3 – Ancient Rome

Delve into the life of Rome’s ancient citizens as you explore the Forum. This vast collection of ruins was once the heart of the Empire – a thriving district filled with temples, basilicas, government buildings and bustling public spaces. Inside the Colosseum, you’ll find it easy to imagine the roar of the 70,000 spectators who filled this imposing stadium on its opening day 2,000 years ago. This afternoon, take advantage of your hotel’s city-center location to shop and explore at your own pace.  Meals B

Day 4 – Off to Umbria

Journey into the Umbrian countryside and check in to the Borgobrufa Spa Resort - surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and medieval hilltop towns. Upon arrival, check in to Le Tre Vaselle, situated in a handsome 17th-century building within the ancient town walls. After time to refresh, visit the unusual Wine and Olive Oil Museum to learn about the region’s ancient wine culture. Tonight, you’ll enjoy the fine Umbrian cuisine of Borgobrufa’s Quattro Sensi restaurant.  Meals B+D

Day 5 – Assisi + The Lovely Hill Towns of Umbria

Your guided exploration of the region begins in the nearby town of Assisi, hailed for splendid examples of medieval architecture like the Basilica of St. Francis – embellished with marvelous frescoes by Giotto. In Perugia, you’ll wander with your guide along cobblestone streets graced with the medieval homes of noble families. Today, historic Perugia is also a friendly university town filled with the energy of its younger residents. Before returning to Torgiano, you’ll also discover the evocative charms and fine architecture of two more Umbrian towns: Spello, with its ancient stone houses and small-town charm, and Todi, perched on a two-crested hill overlooking the Tiber River.  This evening, you’ll sit down to another elegant dinner with wine.  Meals B+D

Day 6 – Taste of Umbria

Travel to the nearby town of Montefalco to visit the Arnaldo Caprai Winery, one of Italy’s finest. Enjoy a tour of this lovely vineyard estate and sample some of the fine wines including its esteemed Montefalco Sagrantino, the perfect complement to a delightful lunch featuring fresh countryside fare. This afternoon, you’ll have ample time to enjoy the historic ambience of Torgiano and your hotel.  Meals B+L+D

Day 7 – Siena + Onward to Florence

This morning’s journey takes you northward through the picturesque countryside to Siena for a guided walking tour including the Piazza del Campo; built on the site of an ancient Roman market, this impressive town square has been the heart of Siena’s social and civic life since the 12th century. You’ll also visit the Siena Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece built of gleaming white marble in the 13th and 14th centuries. Continue onward to Florence and check in to the charming Hotel Balestri, a boutique hotel with a wonderful location overlooking the Arno River in the heart of the city. This evening you’ll dine in one of our favorite restaurants in Florence.  Meals B+D

Day 8 – Renaissance Glory of Florence

This morning’s walking tour with our native-born Florentine expert reveals the Renaissance glory of this beloved city. Walk through the lovely Piazza della Signoria and marvel at the historic Duomo complex including the gilded bronze doors of the Baptistery and the spectacular dome designed by Brunelleschi. In the famed Accademia Gallery, you’ll see famous Renaissance masterpieces like Michelangelo’s David.  Meals B

Day 9 – To Bologna + Venice

Depart Florence after breakfast and journey across the Apennines to Bologna, revered as a city of fine food and learning. It’s home to one of the world’s oldest universities and famous Italian companies like Ferrari, Lamborghini and Ducati. Mortadella sausage, Balsamic vinegar and Bolognese spaghetti are some of its culinary specialties. Enjoy a tour of Bologna’s highlights and then continue across the fertile Padana Plains to Venice. A private water taxi will take you to the Hotel Palace Bonvecchiati, ideally located close to the grandeur of St. Mark’s Square. Our local staff is on hand to assist with dining recommendations for your first evening in Venice.  Meals B

Day 10 – The Magic of Venice

Delight in the rich history and magical allure of the city as you explore with our engaging Venetian guide. Admire the handsome colonnaded arcades that border the Piazza San Marco and gaze in wonder upon the ornately embellished façade and grand cupolas of the Basilica, a testament to the wealth and grandeur of ancient Venice. Nearby is the Doge’s Palace, a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture and once the center of power for the mighty Republic. Tour this impressive landmark and walk across the infamous Bridge of Sighs to visit the prison cells. After sightseeing, stop in one of the city’s many bàcari for a glass of wine and some light snacks – a time honored tradition here in Venice. This evening, delight in a serenaded Gondola ride along the city’s picturesque canals. Then sit down to a memorable Farewell Dinner accompanied by fine Italian wine.  Meals B+D

Day 11 – Depart Venice

Today we’ll take you to the airport or rail station for your onward journey.  Meals B
