DAYS 1-2: USA or Canada/Venice, Italy
Depart on an overnight flight to Venice. Arrive at your prestigious hotel by private launch and spend the rest of the day at leisure. This evening meet your fellow travellers at a welcome dinner at the hotel. Hotel Bauer Meals: D DAY 3: Venice Stroll through this unique city with your specialist local guide and admire the architecture along the winding canals. The Doge's Palace was the seat of the main government departments and the residence of the Doge who ruled the Venetian Republic. Lavish frescoes, graceful staircases and gilded stucco work testify to the glory and opulence of this period. One of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture in Venice is St. Mark's Basilica, once the Doge's chapel. Wander through vibrant St. Mark's Square, lined with cafés and perfect for people watching; Napoleon considered it to be the "world's greatest drawing room." This evening, after a romantic gondola ride, dine à la carte at a traditional trattoria. Hotel Bauer Meals: B D DAY 4: Venice/Florence Transfer by private launch to join the train to Florence. On arrival, your specialist local guide escorts you on a tour of this glorious city, with its russet-colored roofs, domed basilica and bustling piazzas. Florence is a paradise for art lovers who find no shortage of museums and galleries housing centuries' worth of treasures. See the Duomo (Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), the famous landmark of Florence. The Duomo was the largest cathedral in Europe when it was built (13th-15th centuries) and could accommodate 30,000 worshippers. Visit the Galleria dell'Accademia to view Michelangelo's famous David. This evening dine à la carte at one of a carefully selected choice of restaurants. Helvetia & Bristol Meals: B L D DAY 5: Florence Today is at leisure to explore more of the many attractions in Florence. Perhaps visit San Lorenzo church and chapels, once the Medici family's parish church, where most of the family is buried. Don't miss the famous Ponte Vecchio, the covered shop-lined bridge. Alternatively, enjoy a wine tasting in Florence, followed by a guided visit to the Uffizi Gallery to admire its famous masterpieces by artists that include Giotto, Botticelli and da Vinci. Helvetia & Bristol Meal: B DAY 6: Florence/Orvieto/Rome Depart Florence and head south through the Tuscan countryside into Umbria. Stop in the medieval hill town of Orvieto, rising above the nearly vertical faces of tuff cliffs. When Rome was just a small village in a marsh, Orvieto was already flourishing as an Etruscan city. The Romans saw it as a threat and leveled the city but kept a port on the Tiber so that they could continue to ship home a supply of the famous wine (Orvieto Classico) produced here. After lunch at a local restaurant, join your guide for a tour of this ancient city. Wander through the magnificent Piazza del Duomo to the majestic Gothic cathedral that houses Luca Signorelli's masterpiece fresco Cycle of the Apocalypse. Later, continue to Rome where you dine à la carte at a local restaurant. St. Regis Grand Hotel Meals: B L D DAY 7: Rome and Vatican City The "Eternal City" of Rome is one of living history, from the ancient ruins of the empire to the opulence of the Vatican and the little gelato stands that offer their savory treats. Begin your visit to Vatican City at St. Peter's Square. The global capital of Catholicism and Europe's only state to be governed by an absolute monarch (the Pope), the Vatican is also the world's smallest sovereign state. Explore the magnificent Vatican Museum, including the Sistine Chapel with its famous frescoed ceiling by Michelangelo. After lunch, the afternoon is at leisure. This evening enjoy a farewell dinner at your hotel. St. Regis Grand Hotel Meals: B L D DAY 8: Rome Start this morning with an introduction to ancient Rome. Visit the Colosseum, the most famous monument of ancient Rome. Imagine how it must have once bustled with activity. Gladiatorial contests, battle re-enactments and dramatic performances based on classical mythology were all held here. Then tour the Forum, the center for politics, religion and business in ancient Rome. Wander through the ruins of almost 900 years of history and see the triumphal Arch of Constantine. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure before this evening's farewell cocktail reception. St. Regis Grand Hotel Meals: B DAY 9: Rome/USA or Canada After breakfast transfer to the airport to board a homebound flight. Meals: B
